Rajat Verma on being part of Dahej Daasi: I had to change my boy-next-door personality to one that had an attitude

There are some characters that totally transform you, and for actor Rajat Verma, one such role is that of Jay in Dahej Daasi, on Nazara TV. Produced by Do Dooni 4 Films’ Ravindra Gautam and Raghuvir Shekhawat, he says that he loved the concept of the show.

“I really liked the title because it’s very unique. It prominently tells the story, people know instantly what they are going to watch. My character Jay Singh is a young kunwar of small village in Rajasthan who has been brought up by his mother. He is very emotional because he has been raised by a woman. During his childhood, he was sent to Delhi to study so he is unaware of the culture and traditions, and has a modern approach. When he comes back, he gets to know about the culture and traditions. He is very rebellious and challenges these customs,” he says.

As for preparations, he says, “The unique experience of working in the show is that I got to do action sequences. I had never done these before. I also had a small injury in my thumb due to an error on my part. But it was a fun and amazing experience. We did a lot of preparation for the role. I took a lot of workshops with Raghuvir Shekhawat sir. I had to change my boy-next-door personality to one that had an attitude of being part of a Rajput family.”

What connects him with the character, he says, “The one thing that connects me to the character is I am kind of rebellious in the same way; things that hurt people and harm the society, I tend to fight them,” he says.

He adds, “I have never been to any place where such traditions are followed so I don’t know how the audience will relate. I hope people who live in such places, watch and realize that these harmful, old traditions must change. People will relate to Jay, when they watch me with Maasa played by Sayantani Ghosh.”

Meanwhile, he adds that working with Ravindra Gautam and Raghuvir Shekhawat is amazing. “The experience has been great. Ravindra Sir is very passionate about his work, and even though he is a producer, he is involved in everything from character development to story development. I love to see his energy even when is occupied with work, he works so much. He wants to make the show and bring a change. Raghuvir sir is such an amazing person as well. The way his lines are written, you don’t feel like changing anything. I make sure that I deliver the dialogues to perfection.”
